- CMU’s Spring Carnival this Thursday, April 18th - Saturday 20th

- the 56th International Pittsburgh Folk Festival this Friday and Saturday (at Soldiers and Sailors in Oakland)

- The Butterfly Forest at Phipps opens April 20 and runs through September 2. Their Summer Flower Show opens April 27 and ends October 6.

- The next gallery crawl downtown is April 26.

- Silk Screen Asian American Film Festival May 10-19

- Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival May 15-19 — Architects of Air will be back again with a new/different ‘balloon castle’ from last year; this one’s called Exxopolis!

Hi, followers! (There aren’t many of you.) If you are in Pittsburgh, I’d be thrilled if you stopped downtown at Future Tenant 819 Penn Ave. for Mixed Threads the Pop-up Edition. Local designers (clothing), DJs, artists. They accept cash and checks and are open weekdays from 12-4 and weekends 12-8. The last day is Saturday, December 1. Some of my art is hanging up and this is the first time I’ve had art shown in a gallery! They are for sale too!

Made Primanti’s (capocollo and provolone) sandwiches for dinner. So happy they turned out well! I used this recipe, but made a few changes: 1) Completely eliminated the 1/4 cup vegetable oil mentioned for the coleslaw part… not necessary at all. 2) After adding the cider vinegar and black pepper I tossed it a few times, maybe every 15-20 minutes or so for an hour or a little more so that all the slaw had a chance to sit in the vinegar. If you try it and it tastes too “raw” it probably has to soak in the vinegar longer. 3) Added another spoon of sugar to the slaw after tasting it. 4) I pan-fried the fries (didn’t salt them) in about 1/8” of oil in batches on a non-stick skillet. This took some time… 5) Put the capocollo and provolone on a baking sheet in the oven on the lowest heat setting while cooking the last batch of fries/skipped the skillet warming step (and thus also cutting out the butter)… kind of silly I think when the recipe says to also put them in the oven to melt the cheese.

So good!!! My husband said it tasted exactly like Primanti’s.

Looking forward to this weekend. Art All Night in Lawrenceville Saturday (evening) and hopefully also Pyrotopia: Festival of Fire Arts. On Friday there’s a gallery crawl downtown, but I don’t think I’ll be attending… just thought it was worth mentioning.

Pittsburgh's protractors

Last summer a friend from out of town asked me if I had heard about ‘the Pittsburgh protractors.’ I hadn’t and he gave me this link. Someone has been gluing protractors (numbered and painted different colors) all over the city since then. I think it’s pretty neat and on the rare occasion that I see one, it kind of makes my day. There is a “master list” of most of them and their locations which I have consulted a couple times, but I think it’s also fun to just keep a look out for them. This past Wednesday while I was in the North Side (dropped off my art for SWAN Day and took a little photo walk) I found two on my own.

SWAN Day Pittsburgh 2012

Feeling anxious and a little bit excited. Some of my art will be exhibited during SWAN Day (Support Women Artists Now Day) March 15 and 16 at the New Hazlett Theater. This will only be my second show and I’m really hoping that my stuff doesn’t look too amateurish next to everyone else’s art. It’s a multidisciplinary event though which means that in addition to the art there will be performances (dance, music, poetry, theater, fashion and fire performance)! Aaaaah getting a little bit stressed out… need to finish up my art.

FYI there’s a pretty cool exhibition at the Wood Street Galleries downtown called In Transit by HC Gilje; it runs through April 8. (Second and third floors above the T station, free admission.) I think I’m going to go back before then sometime so I can take more pictures.
